In 1920, George Stanley Halas was awarded a charter team in the newly established National Football League. Halas originally stationed his team in Decatur, Illinois but found financial hardships caused the team to move to Chicago. Halas established himself as the prominent figure within the Chicago Bears organization and in 1932 he became sole owner of the team. George Halas died on October 31, 1983 and the team of which he served 63 years with wore a screen printed patch in his honor. The Bears have continued to wear the legendary owner’s initials on their sleeve. Walter Payton, was the Bears 1975 first round pick and was known as Sweetness for his play making ability.
